Red Stag

We hunt Red Deer via spot and stalk, safari style and sometimes from a blind and you may hunt them with a bow, rifle, black powder or handgun. We can accommodate hunters of any age and experience level.

The Red Deer is one of the largest deer on the planet, next to the Elk or the Moose.  The Red Stag also carries a large rack of antlers, which adds to the prestige in hunting the animal to add to your exotic trophy collection.  The average Red Deer Stag weighs around 750 lbs and stands about 5 feet at the shoulder (Hinds can weight 260-370 lbs), although mature Red Stags can reach up to 1,000 lbs.

The Red Deer is native to Europe and Great Britain and in 1969, legislation was passed to permit the capture and commercial exploitation of wild deer and to raise deer in captivity.  The Red Deer flourish on Texas ranches and because of this Texas has the highest population of the biggest Red Deer in the world.

Red Deer are prized for their large antlers which start growing in the spring and are shed each year, usually at the end of winter.  Red Stag antlers are distinctive in being rather straight, heavy and textured, with the fourth and fifth tines forming a "crown" or "cup" in mature males. Any tines in excess of the fourth and fifth tine will grow radially from the crown. Red Stag antlers are made of bone that can grow one inch a day and their antlers are testosterone-driven, meaning when the stag’s testosterone levels fall, their velvet comes off and their antlers stop growing.

Red Stag have a pair of ivory teeth, just like their cousin the Elk. Red Deer are also highly sought after for their excellent venison meat. Red Deer meat is most abundant and most venison prepared in restaurants is from the Red Deer.

Red Stags can and do interbreed with both Elk and Sika Deer.

There are no restrictions on hunting the Fallow Deer in Texas, which makes it a very popular suitable trophy (we hunt from early August to the end of February) so if you want a Red Stag in Velvet, we ask that you come in July or August, otherwise September 1st, all of our Big Red Stag should be hard-antlered.

We hunt both Red Stags and Hinds. Prices for Stags vary based on antler size.
